Gyro instruments

Gyro instruments we repair and overhaul

A spinning gyroscope senses attitude, heading or rate of turn. These are the gyro instruments operators send us most.

In the standard six-pack, three instruments are gyros: attitude, turn and heading. A Castleberry attitude indicator and directional gyro are shown in their places; HSIs and flight directors build on the same gyros.
  • Attitude indicators

Also called artificial horizons. They show the aircraft's pitch and bank against the horizon.

    Common reasons for removal

    • Slow to erect, or won't erect fully after start-up
    • Horizon bar tilts or drifts in straight-and-level flight
    • Warning flag stays in view, or the gyro whines or grinds as it spins down
Request a quote for an attitude indicator
  • Flight directors

Add command bars to the attitude display, showing the pitch and bank to fly to stay on a selected path.

    Common reasons for removal

    • Command bars stuck, biased or out of view
    • Warning flags stay in view
    • Attitude display slow to erect or drifting
Request a quote for a flight director
  • Directional gyros

Also called heading indicators. They show the aircraft's heading without the swing of a magnetic compass.

    Common reasons for removal

    • Heading drifts faster than normal precession between resets
    • Card sticks, jumps or won't set with the heading knob
    • Whining or grinding from the gyro
Request a quote for a directional gyro
  • Horizontal situation indicators

Combine a heading indicator with course deviation, so heading and navigation read from one display.

    Common reasons for removal

    • Heading card sticks, jumps or is slow to slave
    • Course or glideslope pointers stuck or sluggish
    • Warning flags stay in view
Request a quote for an HSI
  • Turn and bank indicators / turn coordinators

Show the rate of turn, with a ball that shows whether the turn is coordinated.

    Common reasons for removal

    • Sluggish or no response in a turn
    • Warning flag stays in view on an electric unit
    • Bubble or discolored fluid in the ball's tube
Request a quote for a turn and bank indicator or turn coordinator

Service options

Repair, overhaul, exchange or replace

We evaluate every instrument on the bench, talk through what we found and recommend whether to repair or replace it. You choose how to proceed.

Bench evaluation

Targeted

Repair

Find the fault and fix it: troubleshooting on the bench, then correcting the problem and confirming the instrument operates properly.

Repair vs. overhaul

Complete

Overhaul

Restore the whole instrument: it is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary, reassembled and tested.

How it works

When downtime matters

Exchange

When the aircraft can't wait for its own gyro, ask about an exchange. Options depend on the part number, so send it and we'll tell you what's possible.

About exchanges

Refresh and modernize

Replace

When a gyro is beyond economical repair, or you're ready for more capability, we supply new instruments and avionics upgrades from Garmin, Mid-Continent, Sigma-Tek and more.
